School Food Program Analysis: A Framework for Linking Implementation Strategies to Goals

The cover page of the School Food Programs Around the World - Lessons for Canada document.

The Canadian School Food Program (SFP) landscape is a complex mix of programs and funding models, largely due to the diversity of jurisdictional authorities and challenges surrounding healthy eating in schools.

Across Canada, there are wide variations of program mandate, reach, policy and implementation modality, with little collaboration. Instituting a universal healthy school food program in Canada is not merely a necessity but a strategic investment likely to yield substantial health and educational dividends, ultimately reducing health costs and fostering economic prosperity.

The Canadian school food sector will benefit from an in-depth understanding and clearer picture of how implementation characteristics align with goals to create the most successful SFPs. Our research will explore successful SFP models from Canada and globally, systematically addressing gaps in understanding program structure, implementation strategies, and global achievement. Utilizing the methods of the world's leading school food programs, this approach addresses a significant knowledge gap, particularly in understanding how these programs achieve their goals.
