Procedures: Honorary Doctorate Policy

1. Purpose

These Procedures outline the processes for nomination, approval, selection and revocation, if applicable, for honorary doctorates awarded by the University as set out in the Honorary Doctorate Policy.

2. Nomination Process

2.1  Any person, whether a University community member or not, may submit a nomination. Individuals cannot nominate themselves or members of their family.

2.2  The nomination of an individual should remain confidential. Nominees should not be informed that they are being nominated for an honorary doctorate.

2.3  An online must be submitted, including the nominee鈥檚 verifiable contact information and all required attachments.

2.4  Nominations should include sufficient documentation to clearly support the nomination and address the criteria.

2.5  If outside letters of support are solicited, those writing the letters should be informed of the confidential nature of the nomination process.

2.6  Nominations may be submitted at any time during the year but are only adjudicated twice a year (spring and fall).

3. Approval Process

3.1  The Senate Awards and Ceremonials Committee (AWCC) adjudicates nominations twice a year (spring and fall).

3.2  The adjudication process is confidential. Nominators will receive confirmation of receipt of the nomination but will not be informed of its status. The outcome of a nomination will not be released out of respect for the nominee and to ensure the integrity of the process.

3.3  The following criteria are taken into consideration when approving nominations:

  • In what ways is the nominee鈥檚 achievement truly outstanding?
  • In what ways has the nominee made an extraordinary contribution to scholarship, society and culture?
  • Will this person鈥檚 achievement be perceived as important and exemplary to the students who will graduate at convocation?
  • Has this person already been recognized by other honours and awards?
  • Has this person been recognized by the field or profession in which they are said to excel?
  • Is it appropriate and/or strategic for the University to honour this person at this time?
  • Does this candidate reflect the values of diversity and inclusiveness of the University, either through their own lived experiences or through the work they do?

3.4 Approved candidates are subject to a background check to ensure there are no reputational risks associated with awarding them an honorary doctorate.

4. Selection Process

4.1  Approved candidates are forwarded to the Office of the President for selection. It is not guaranteed that an approved candidate will be selected to receive an honorary doctorate.

4.2  There is no limit on the length of time an approved candidate remains on the approved list. However, if selected to receive an honorary doctorate and active for 5 years or more, the University will conduct an updated background review to ensure there are no new developments that would prompt the committee to reconsider its approval.

5. Awarding of Honorary Doctorates at Convocation

5.1  Selected candidates are contacted directly by the President and invited to receive an honorary doctorate at convocation.

5.2  While a candidate is invited to attend a specific convocation ceremony, the honorary doctorate is bestowed by the University and not by the relevant faculty.

5.3  Honourees must be present at convocation to receive the honorary degree; it will not be offered in absentia. If the candidate dies after accepting the award, but prior to it being bestowed, the degree will be awarded posthumously.

6. Revocation

6.1 The University may revoke an honorary doctorate that compromises the University鈥檚 values or reputation. The University may revoke an honorary doctorate if it jeopardizes the legal or moral integrity of the University or adversely impacts the University鈥檚 standing in the community.

6.2 The Office of the President shall be responsible for establishing the appropriate procedure for any revocation request as required and engaging additional parties as appropriate.
