Turnitin instructor guide
NEW! If you use Turnitin in your Brightspace Assignments, please make sure to use the instructions below, in the section called "IMPORTANT: Review some of the options available in Turnitin". It is vital that you enable the Institution paper repository.
To learn more about why this change was implemented, please review our announcement from April 27/26.
ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ licensed Turnitin as a plagiarism detection tool that can be used in conjunction with D2L Brightspace.
Turnitin Originality Check helps to promote academic integrity by comparing a student’s written assignment submission against the Turnitin content database and creates a report showing areas of similarity.
Please note that ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½â€™s Turnitin license agreement specifically allows only student-related, course-based work to be submitted to Turnitin. Internal use by ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ departments is not included in our Turnitin license agreement.

Update your course outline
Several key considerations must be addressed when using educational technology tools in your course. It is your responsibility to ensure that students are fully informed about the tool, its costs, and other details to align with University policy and Provincial acts.
We strongly encourage you to include all of this essential information in your course outline, to ensure students are aware of how it impacts them.
Refer to the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ course outline template for some ways to incorporate this information into your course outline and to the Senate Course Outline Policies for guidance on what needs to be included in your course outlines.
Sample course outline content
This course utilizes Turnitin Originality, an external educational technology tool in addition to D2L Brightspace. This tool is used to enhance your course learning experience by promoting academic integrity and detecting possible academic misconduct.
Costs: The tool does not result in additional costs to you.
Other requirements: There are no additional technical requirements for its usage.
Account creation: An account is automatically created through your use of this tool in your D2L Brightspace course.
Data privacy and usage: This tool will have access to your name, ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ email address, and academic work, and it is visible to All course instructors, Academic Assistants, and Graders. This information will be retained within Brightspace for 2 years, in case of potential appeals or FIPPA requests.
Opt-out options: This tool does have an opt-out policy, and you may inquire with your instructor regarding alternative assessment options, if available.
For technical support regarding Turnitin Originality, please visit the Student Support page.
All Turnitin settings can be found in Assessment > Assignments.
- Click on the downward-facing arrow beside your assignment name, and choose Edit Assignment.
- Then, click on the Evaluation & Feedback panel on the right side of the page.
- Click on Manage Turnitin.
- In the popup, select Enable Similarity Report for this folder to connect your assignment with Turnitin (to use similarity scoring).
- Select Allow learners to see Turnitin® similarity scores in their submission folder if you want students to see their score. We recommend this, as it can be a teaching moment, if students are aware of potential issues with plagiarism or improper citation. If you allow multiple submissions before the deadline, this can provide students with an opportunity to fix their mistakes before the assignment is due.
- Under Frequency, we recommend selecting Automatic originality checking on all submissions.
- To ensure you comply with ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½â€™s privacy policy regarding student data, there are a couple more settings you need to review. Click on the More Options button to open a popup window, where you can adjust more settings.
- Click on Save to save your settings.
The default Turnitin settings are usually enough to create the originality reports immediately, however you can check the settings available in case you need to change/add any setting.
From the Turnitin popup, click on More Options. A new window will open, with settings you can modify.
Note: To comply with ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½â€™s privacy policy regarding student data, it is very important that you click on the Submit papers to dropdown, and choose the Institution paper repository.
To help you understand why, here’s an explanation of the different options:
- Standard paper repository: Your paper will be added to Turnitin’s global database. It will be compared against submissions from ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ and universities worldwide, and it may also be used to check future papers for similarity.
- [New!] Institution paper repository: Your paper will be stored in a private database used only by ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½. It will still be checked against submissions from ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ and other universities worldwide, but it will not be accessible to or searchable by other institutions.
- No repository: Your paper will be checked to generate a Similarity Report but will not be stored in any database. As a result, it cannot be used to detect similarity in future submissions.
Please also see the table below for a clear explanation.
Turnitin Repository Options Explained
| Feature | Standard paper repository | Institution paper repository | No repository |
| Checks against the internet | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Checks against journals/books | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Checks against global papers | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Saves paper for global use | ✓ | No | No |
| Saves paper for ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ use | ✓ | ✓ | No |
The following two options are automatically enabled for all course shells at ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½:
- Allow submission of any file type: While not all file types can be reviewed by Turnitin, this ensures that if the file type and content is appropriate (adequate text content, etc), Turnitin will try to review it.
- Allow late submissions: As long as the end date on your assignment is later than the due date, late submissions will be reviewed by Turnitin.
By default, Generate Similarity Reports for student submission is selected, as this is the main purpose of enabling Turnitin on an assignment. Please leave this selected, or you will not see your reports.
We strongly recommend changing Report generation speed to Generate reports immediately (students can resubmit until due date): After 3 resubmissions, reports generate after 24 hours. This ensures that if a student realizes they made a mistake before the due date, they can resubmit, and their work will be reviewed. If you choose either of the other options, there is a chance that you will not see a report or score for the student’s new submission.
By default, Allow students to view Similarity Reports is automatically enabled for all courses, so that in the initial Turnitin settings for the assignment (the screen before this one), you can turn this on or off, as you wish. We recommend turning it on, as seeing their similarity report can be a great learning experience for your students.
It is up to you if you wish to select any of the checkboxes to exclude bibliographic materials, quoted materials or small sources from the report.
While most instructors will leave all of the Compare against options selected, if you feel that any of these would raise false warnings in your students’ work, you can deselect them.
If your assignment requires students to use a template that will cause their submissions to all have a high level of similarity, you can use the Exclude assignment template options to upload or create a template.
If you have made unique choices on this page that you wish to use for future assignments in this course shell, select Save these settings for future use.
Click on the blue Submit button to save your changes to More Options in Turnitin.
When viewing the list of submissions made to an assignment, click the Similarity Score beside any submission to open the file in Turnitin.
The student's report will open in a new tab.
New Similarity Report View
In the Turnitin similarity report you can access the following details:
1) The Overall Similarity score and match/source details are listed at the top of the report, followed by details of each match group.
2) Not-Cited or Quoted text: Text that is similar, but has not been identified as a quote or by a citation.
3) Missing Quotations: Exact text that is cited, but so similar that it may be an exact quote but has not been identified as such.
4) Missing Citation: An exact quote without a citation.
5) Cited and Quoted: The text is quoted and associated to a source.
Note that there can be overlap between sources or match groups.
The short answer is "no". There is no way for an instructor to submit a students' paper in such a way that it is tied to the student's account.
It is possible to use a demo student account to submit the paper purely for the originality score, but please take into consideration that students are allowed to opt out of submitting their work to Turnitin - and so submitting their paper may not be an appropriate action.
If a student uploads a new submission after previously submitting a file to the assignment, the new submission will not be checked against any previous submission. This means the new submission will not receive an originality report score of 100%. This is true whether or not the file name is different, or if the assignment is submitted before or after the due date.
At this time, we do not recommend using Turnitin for a text submission assignment. The assignment submissions will not display as expected in Turnitin Feedback Studio. If you wish to use Turnitin, please use a file-based submission instead.
Occasionally, there may be a technical issue where the connection between Brightspace and Turnitin cannot be established. When this happens, Turnitin does not receive the request to process an assignment submission file, and you will not see the similarity score next to a student's submission.
Most of the time, you can just click on the icon beside each submission to resubmit the file to Turnitin. If you have numerous students that are missing their Similarity Score, you will need to scroll down and click on each one.
You do not need to stay on the page while these process. They may take a while, depending on how busy the Turnitin servers are and if it's a busy time in the term. It may take as little as a few minutes, or as long as overnight. Just reload the page to see the scores, once they have been processed.
If you still don't see Similarity Scores...
Go to Assessment > Assignments.
Click on the downward-facing arrow beside the assignment name, and choose Edit Submission Folder.
Click on the Evaluation & Feedback panel on the right side of the page.
Click on Manage Turnitin.
Click on the More Options in Turnitin button.
Scroll down, and under the Similarity Report dropdown, choose Generate reports immediately (students can resubmit until due date): After 3 resubmissions, reports generate after 24 hours.
Click on the blue Submit button at the bottom of the screen, and then the blue Save and Close button to save your edits to the Assignment Submission Folder.
If students can't see their Turnitin Similarity Score or Similarity Report:
In the Assignment's settings, click on the Evaluation & Feedback panel on the right side of the page.
Click on Manage Turnitin and ensure that the Allow learners to see Turnitin similarity scores in their submission folder checkbox is selected.
